Open-ear clip-on earbuds are all over the place these days. What began as a small option for runners and cyclists has become one of the fastest-growing earbud types without much fanfare.
I’ve checked out quite a few of them in the last year, and to be frank, most either feel good but sound weak, or have decent sound but don’t fit well.
So when the Edifier R1 showed up — a $50 pair of open-ear clip-on earbuds — I didn’t expect much. But after using them for a while, I understand why people say these are a budget-friendly winner.
They’re not flawless, but they exceed expectations for their price tag.
What’s in the Box
The unboxing experience is minimal but practical. Inside the package, you’ll find:
- Edifier R1 earbuds
- Compact charging case
- USB-A to USB-C charging cable
- Fold-out user manual and safety documentation
There are no ear tips — which makes sense, since these earbuds don’t go inside your ears.
Design That Feels Thought Through
The first thing I noticed wasn’t the earbuds — it was the case. Edifier went with a soft-touch, rubberized finish that feels smooth and slightly grippy at the same time.
It’s compact, rounded, and genuinely pocket-friendly. There’s a single LED on the front for battery status, a USB-C port around the back, and a pairing button. Simple, clean, and functional.
Opening the case reveals the R1 earbuds, and this is where Edifier starts doing things differently. These use a clip-on open-ear design, with a flexible band that wraps around the outside of your ear.

The band itself has a slightly rubbery silicone texture, and that detail ends up being far more important than it sounds.
The earbuds are finished in a glossy gray with subtle branding, and despite looking a little flashy, they don’t feel cheap. Each bud weighs just under six grams, so once they’re on your ears, you almost forget about them.
Fit and Comfort
Clip-on earbuds can be tricky. Some slide around, some pinch your ears, and some just feel awkward no matter how much you adjust them. The Edifier R1 gets it right.
Putting them on is easy. You clip them onto your ear, position the speaker just in front of the ear canal, and that’s it. You can raise or lower them slightly, and once you find the sweet spot, they stay there.
That rubberized inner band does a fantastic job gripping your ear without feeling tight or uncomfortable. I shook my head, walked around, even wore them while moving around the house, and they didn’t slip. They’re also comfortable with glasses, which isn’t always the case with open-ear designs.
The biggest advantage here is long-term comfort. Because nothing goes inside your ear canal, there’s no pressure buildup and no ear fatigue. I wore these for hours at a time without feeling the need to take them off — something I can’t say about most in-ear earbuds.
Smart Design Choices That Make Daily Use Easier
One of my favorite features is something you don’t immediately notice: there’s no left or right earbud.
Both earbuds are identical, and the R1 automatically figures out which ear it’s on and assigns the correct audio channel. It doesn’t matter which bud you grab or which slot you put it back into in the case. You can even use just one earbud, and everything works exactly as it should.
It sounds like a small thing, but in daily use, it’s incredibly convenient — especially compared to earbuds that force you to think about orientation every single time.
Controls That Don’t Drive You Crazy
Touch controls are usually a weak point on clip-on earbuds, but Edifier handled this smartly. Instead of making you tap a tiny spot, you can tap anywhere on the loop, and it registers.
The controls are intentionally kept simple — mostly double and triple taps — and you can customize what each gesture does through the Edifier ConneX app. There’s even a sports mode that locks touch input entirely, which is perfect if you’re working out and don’t want accidental pauses.
This is one of those “it just works” implementations, and I appreciated not having to fight the controls every time I adjusted the earbuds.
A Surprisingly Good App Experience
The Edifier ConneX app is better than expected. It shows battery levels clearly, lets you update firmware, customize controls, adjust touch sensitivity, and manage features like wear detection and Bluetooth multipoint.

There’s also a drainage feature that vibrates the earbuds to shake out water or sweat — something you usually see on much more expensive devices. Add in a “find my earbuds” option and adjustable power-off timers, and you’ve got a genuinely useful companion app.
It doesn’t feel bloated or unfinished, which is more than I can say for some competitors at this price.
Sound Quality
Let’s be clear: these are open-ear earbuds. If you’re expecting deep, chest-thumping bass, you’re looking at the wrong category.
That said, the 12 mm drivers inside the Edifier R1 deliver sound that’s surprisingly full for an open-ear design. Out of the box, the tuning is clean and balanced. Switching on the Bass Boost EQ in the app makes a noticeable difference and is the setting I ended up sticking with most of the time.

At low to medium volumes, music sounds lively, detailed, and enjoyable. Vocals come through clearly, and there’s enough low-end presence to keep things engaging while walking or jogging. Push the volume too high, though, and the bass drops off while the treble gets a bit sharp — a common limitation with this style of earbud.
If you use them the way they’re intended — casual listening while staying aware of your surroundings — they sound genuinely good.
Call Quality and Connectivity
For calls, the R1 uses AI-assisted noise reduction. In quieter environments, voices sound clear, if slightly compressed. In noisier situations, background sounds are reduced enough that your voice remains understandable.
They’re not the best earbuds I’ve tested for calls, but they’re absolutely fine for everyday use.
Bluetooth 5.4 brings stable connectivity and multipoint support, which lets you stay connected to two devices at once. Switching between a phone and laptop works smoothly, and once paired, the earbuds reconnect automatically when you take them out of the case.
Battery Life and Durability
Battery life is solid. I consistently got close to the rated 7 hours per charge, with the case extending that to around 28 hours total. Fast charging is also a lifesaver — a quick 15-minute charge gives you about three hours of playback.
The earbuds are IP56 rated, meaning they can handle sweat, rain, and dust without issue. Whether you’re at the gym or caught in bad weather, they’ll keep going.
Final Thoughts
The Edifier R1 doesn’t aim to take the place of regular in-ear earbuds — and that’s its purpose. It provides great comfort smart design, a robust set of features, and audio quality that’s remarkable for open-ear earbuds, all while keeping the price below $50.
The absence of wireless charging and a personalized EQ are minor drawbacks, but they’re not hard to overlook given everything else you get.
If you’re intrigued by open-ear earbuds and don’t want to break the bank, the Edifier R1 stands out as one of the top choices in its class right now. Cozy, clever, and capable — this is how a budget “game-changer” should be.
