CMF Teases New Earbuds, Could They Be the Buds 3?

CMF by Nothing appears to be preparing to launch a fresh pair of wireless earbuds! They’ve just released their first teaser for this upcoming product, giving us a little insight into what could be the next version of their popular CMF Buds.

The teaser is quick, but it does confirm one crucial detail: these aren’t just another set of open-ear earbuds like the recently introduced CMF Clip Pro. Instead, this new model features a traditional in-ear design with silicone tips and a stem.

CMF posted the teaser on X with the caption, “A hint of what’s next.” The image reveals one earbud from below, showcasing a sleek silver metallic finish, a stem, two microphones, and a vibrant orange silicone ear tip. That bright orange tip is definitely in line with CMF’s distinctive design aesthetic.

A new CMF Buds model could be on the way

CMF has not revealed the name of the new earbuds yet. However, the timing has led to speculation that this could be the CMF Buds 3 series.

It has been more than a year since CMF introduced the Buds 2 family, which included the standard CMF Buds 2, Buds 2a and Buds 2 Plus. A new generation would therefore make sense, although there is still no official confirmation that the teaser is for the Buds 3.

There is also no indication yet of which specific model is being shown. If CMF follows the same approach as the previous generation, we could eventually see multiple versions rather than a single pair of earbuds.

The design is easy to recognize

The teaser does not reveal much, but the basic design is clear.

The earbuds have a stem that extends downward from the main housing, while a silicone tip sits at the end of the speaker section. This should provide the tighter seal associated with traditional in-ear earbuds and could also help with passive noise isolation.

Two microphones are visible on the underside of the earbud. Their exact purpose is unknown at this point, but they could be part of the system used for calls, active noise cancellation or other audio features.

The silver finish is also interesting. CMF products are usually known for their more playful use of color and industrial-inspired styling, so it will be interesting to see whether the final earbuds are available in several finishes.

What about the features?

CMF has not announced any specifications yet, so there is little to say about performance at this stage.

The previous CMF Buds 2 lineup already offered features such as active noise cancellation, while the Buds 2 Plus added support for LDAC and Hi-Res Wireless Audio along with more than 60 hours of total battery life.

That gives us a rough idea of what CMF could improve with a new generation, but it would be wrong to assume that the same features will appear on the upcoming model.

Battery life, ANC performance, microphone quality, Bluetooth support and audio codecs are all still unknown. Pricing is also yet to be revealed.

CMF recently entered the clip-on earbud market

The teaser comes only a few weeks after CMF launched the Clip Pro, its first clip-on, open-ear earbuds.

That product takes a very different approach from the new earbuds teased here. Instead of sealing the ear canal, the Clip Pro sits outside the ear and uses a clip-style design.

The new teaser suggests CMF is not moving away from its traditional in-ear range. Instead, the company appears to be expanding its audio lineup with different designs for different types of users.

That could give CMF a stronger position in the increasingly crowded affordable wireless earbud market.

More details should follow soon

For now, the new earbuds remain something of a mystery. CMF has confirmed that another product is coming, but it has not shared the name, launch date, price or specifications.

The possibility of a CMF Buds 3 series is certainly believable given the age of the Buds 2 lineup, but it remains speculation until Nothing or CMF confirms it.

The teaser also suggests that the launch may not be far away. CMF will likely reveal more details in the coming days or weeks, including the official name, features and pricing.

For now, the most interesting takeaway is simple: CMF is preparing another pair of traditional in-ear earbuds, and they could be the long-awaited Buds 3.
