Xiaomi sees them as the next step after the Redmi Buds 6 Lite jumping over a generation as it’s done with other audio products.

When you look at them, both models seem almost the same, which makes you wonder: should you buy the new ones, or are they too similar to the old ones to matter? We put them side by side to compare.

Design and Comfort

Starting with design, there’s very little to discuss — and that’s not a bad thing. The Redmi Buds 8 Lite and 6 Lite are visually identical, both in the charging case and the earbuds themselves.

The LED indicator, USB-C charging port, and pairing button are placed in exactly the same positions.

The earbuds also share the same shape and size, which means comfort is equally excellent on both. They’re lightweight, sit securely in the ear, and can be worn for long periods without fatigue.

Neither model includes automatic ear detection for play/pause when removing an earbud, which would have been a welcome upgrade. That said, considering their price, it’s an understandable omission.

In terms of durability, both earbuds carry an IP54 rating, offering protection against dust and light splashes.

Color options are also the same: black, white, and blue. Simply put, there is no visual or ergonomic advantage to choosing one over the other.

Connectivity

The improved battery efficiency comes partly from a newer Bluetooth version. The Redmi Buds 8 Lite use Bluetooth 5.4, while the 6 Lite rely on Bluetooth 5.3.

In real-world use, the difference in connection stability is minimal. Both models use the AAC codec, pair quickly, and maintain a stable connection without dropouts.

However, the newer model feels slightly more efficient and responsive overall.

Both earbuds support Google Fast Pair and work seamlessly with the Xiaomi Earbuds app, where you can:

• Customize touch controls
• Check battery levels for each earbud and the case
• Adjust EQ presets or create a custom equalizer
• Enable or disable active noise cancellation

They also support multipoint connection, allowing you to connect to a phone and a computer simultaneously — a feature still rare at this price point.

Latency and Everyday Performance

While both earbuds perform reliably, the Redmi Buds 8 Lite show slightly lower latency, especially noticeable when watching videos or playing games.

The improvement is subtle, but side-by-side comparisons reveal that audio synchronization is marginally better on the newer model.

For casual gaming and video streaming, both are perfectly usable, but the 8 Lite do feel just a touch more refined.

Microphone Quality

Call quality is solid on both models, especially considering their price. Voice pickup is clear indoors, and both do a respectable job outdoors.

That said, the Redmi Buds 8 Lite handle background noise slightly better, especially in open environments.

Indoor calls can sound a bit echoey on both, but outdoors the newer model offers marginally better noise suppression.

The difference isn’t huge, but it’s there if you listen closely.

Both earbuds include active noise cancellation, which is rare in this segment.

Sound Quality

This is where expectations might not be met. Despite being a newer generation, the Redmi Buds 8 Lite sound almost identical to the 6 Lite.

Both use the same 12.4 mm titanium-coated dynamic driver, and in practice, the sound signature is virtually unchanged.

The default tuning leans heavily toward bass, which can overpower mids and slightly muddy the overall sound.

Thankfully, Xiaomi’s app includes an EQ preset called “Treble Boost”, which significantly improves balance by lifting mids and highs while pushing bass slightly back. With this preset enabled, both earbuds sound much more refined and enjoyable.

At this price point, overall sound quality is good: no major distortion at high volumes, decent clarity, and plenty of punch. But if you were hoping for a noticeable upgrade in sound with the 8 Lite, you won’t find it here.

Should You Upgrade?

If you already own the Redmi Buds 6 Lite, there’s no strong reason to upgrade. Sound quality is unchanged, and the improvements in battery, connectivity, and ANC are too small to justify replacing a perfectly good pair.

However, if you don’t own either model, the Redmi Buds 8 Lite are the better buy. They offer the same excellent value, with small but meaningful refinements that make them the more future-proof option.

For around $35, it’s hard to find earbuds that offer ANC, multipoint, app support, and solid sound quality — and in that context, the Redmi Buds 8 Lite remain one of the best budget choices available today.
